  2. 1.) In 1900, how does the size of the blue bars compare to the size of the red bars?
2.) In 2000, choose a red bar. What do you notice about the size of the red bar vs the blue bar as age increases? What is the trend of 2000 and how does it differ from the trend of 1900?
3.) Hover over the two nearly invisible bars in age 90 of the 1900 graph. What are the population numbers of the males and females? How is this similar to the 2000 graph?
4.) What do you think might be the reason for the difference in the female vs male population of 2000? Why might this difference be less apparent in 1900?

  3. 1. In 1900 the blue bars are a little taller
    2. As age increases the blue bar becomes less than the red, which is to say in early life there are more men than women and in later life there are more women
3/4. 15k males, 20k females, greater discrepancy in 2000 because bigger sample size.
    Thanks!

  4. 1.) The size of the blue bars are almost the same size as the red bars for most age groups except a couple in the middle where the blue is larger than the red.

2.) The red bars are slightly smaller than the blue bars at first, then they become larger than the blue bars and the difference is becoming more noticeable as the age increases. The trend of 2000 is that population decreases for both males and females as age increases but male population decreases faster. The trend for 1900 is also that population decreases but this time the decrease more or less at the same rate.

3.)Population of the males is 15,164. Population of the females is 20,093. For the year 2000 it is instead 336,303 and 1,064,581 respectively. In both cases there are more females than males.

4.)In the past, I have heard that the male population tends to be more reckless than the female population and thus tend to die sooner. I am not sure how much truth there is to this but it might explain the difference. As for why it is more noticeable in the year 2000, perhaps it is a certain percentage of the male population is dying sooner. So for a larger populations this becomes more noticeable. So since the population is much greater in 2000, the difference is more noticeable while in the year 1900, since the population is much smaller the difference is less noticeable.
